stop saying these words to me

thehand The Purveyor of Wisdom

I spend a lot of time with my nephews, and in doing so I am the frequent beneficiary of wisdom (and laughter). The four-year old is especially verbose and has given me a number of lines that I mutter to myself as I navigate a discombobulated society.

”What you said?”

Typically used when he actually does not hear me, this phrase may also be employed with some incredulity or as a statement of disbelief. It could also be interpreted as, “Are you serious?”

“It’s been a little rough.”

This was the response to a casual question over lunch, “How was preschool today?” It was quickly followed with, “I’m just joking you.” If someone asked me about the past year or so, I’d probably use this little gem in response. It has, indeed, been a little rough.

“Why do you say these words to me? Stop saying these words to me.”

An exasperated reply to the obnoxious pestering of his older brother during a truck ride home from a camping trip. I guess this was his polite way of saying, “Shut up.” Spend a few minutes perusing social media, the news, or listening to politicians, and you’ll find ample opportunity to use these statements.

“Oh. Sorry.”

Always sincere. Often a little too late. The good Lord knows we could use a few more apologies and a lot more empathy in our world.

If only four-year-olds could run for Congress.
