no new pens
If you have perused any of my previous writing, it may be evident to you that I am a list maker. I recently wrote a post about using caution with “life lists,” but that doesn’t stop me from making them.
I was recently clearing out clutter in the notes app on my phone and came across a list entitled, “New Rules.” It was created in 2024, when I was trying to balance my personal life with my role as a junior high school principal. It was a lengthy list. I thought I would share a few of my favorites. Perhaps, you will find them useful.
- Buying “stuff” will not make me feel better, or fix anything. Don’t buy more “stuff.”
- Help people, but don’t take on their problems.
- I do not need another self-help, or time management book.
- Slow down.
- Eat lunch.
- Politely say “no” more often.
- Do what is right. Not what I think others want.
- Do not buy another pen or notebook until I have used what I own.
- Be okay with scribbles and imperfection.
- If it’s less than two miles, bike or walk.
- Go camping and fishing frequently.
I’m not going to lie. My success with these rules was (and still is) questionable. It is SO hard to pass up a new pen, or new edition of Field Notes. But, I’m going to stand by this wisdom – regardless of the foolishness of the advisor (me).
Best wishes!
