does my phone "own" me?

A wonder, that a device so small, in existence for less than twenty years, can be so influential in one's daily life.

An evolutionary appendage that serves a purpose, but one we can do without. Though, this is contrary to our belief.

I forget my keys. My water bottle. The day's lunch sack. I even forget where I am going, but I do not forget my phone.

A device of juxtaposition. Capable of enhancing our lives through connection, and stories, and photos. Or wreaking havoc in our minds -- stirring up worry, despair, jealousy and anger.

Articles, podcasts, and books focus on how best to retain sovereignty over our phones. Yet, most owners struggle and many lose the battle. Instead of administering our devices, we are programmed by badges alerts, likes, and chimes.

How do we retain the best, and avoid the worst? Or, for the irresolute (like me) is it even worth possessing?
