here and now

The real enemies of our lives are the "oughts" and the "ifs." They pull us backward into the unalterable past, or forward into the unpredictable future. But real life takes place in the here and now. - Henri Nouwen

I sometimes wonder how much time I've wasted in worry. Lingering on regrets about past decisions or stuck in nervous anticipation about future events. A cycle of anxious perseveration about things outside of my control. I know it would be measured in days.

Today, I went fishing with my brother and nephews. It was great because the focus was on time together...and catching fish. I wasn't thinking about yesterday's work, tomorrow's travel, or even the remainder of the day. It was a rare time when I was truly invested in the present.

We only get to live the moment we are in. No option to relive the past, or skip to the future.

We might as well make the most of it.
