a dog refused my apology

IMG_1603

Last week I was doing some work in a field of our family’s Christmas tree farm that borders a neighbor. They have quite a menagerie of animals — chickens, goats, sheep, a horse, rabbits, goats, pigeons and greyhounds. In addition, they have a couple Great Pyrenees dogs that keep an eye on the “zoo.”

The Pyrenees are very friendly. I always feel sorry for them because I don’t think they get much human attention. I approached the fence line and the dogs bounded up to greet me. I was petting the older of the two when he suddenly yelped and ran away. To my dismay, there was an electric fence nearly hidden in the fence line. Face palm.

Today, I was driving by the entrance to the neighbors place (no electric fence) and noticed the dogs. I pulled over so I could make amends. The younger of the two eagerly greeted me and accepted pets and kind words.

The older dog (the one that got shocked) kept his distance and refused my apology. Can’t say I blame him. He did wag his tail at me, so I think there is hope.

I’ll try again tomorrow.
