creed's blog

There is an episode of the popular comedy series, The Office, where Ryan (the intern) sets up a “blog” for Creed Bratton (the eccentric quality assurance manager at Dunder Mifflin, Scranton). Creed, the guy who sprouted mung beans in his desk drawer for a healthy, and awful smelling snack. In an effort to protect the world from Creed’s deranged thinking, Ryan opened a word document and added a url at the top – thus giving Creed a “blog” where he could share his irrational ideas. In reality, Creed had an audience of one. Ryan.

This forum is my personal version of Creed’s blog. I’m not sure anyone will ever read this post, or anything else I write here.

There is something incredibly liberating about that notion. As much as I would like to minimize my concerns, I care about what people think. I am especially mindful of offending others. I don’t want people to be upset, or angry with me. This impacts what I choose to write about as well as how I translate my thoughts into words. It is beneficial to have appropriate restraint and tact when sharing, but too much concern about how words might be perceived may alter the intended message.

Writing for an audience of a few, or one, or none, allows me to be more true to myself.

Perhaps, with practice, I’ll be more confident in my writing and I can go public. Until then, if you're reading this, it’s just you and me.
