confessions of a cowardly kid

Curious cattle sizing me up - near Clayton, New Mexico

As a kid I was terrified of cows. Or, so I'm told.

I don't recall this (I was too young). But, at least once a year the story is retold by my parents, or my aunt, or my uncle. Typically at a large family gathering when the topic of embarrassing moments arises.

"Jeffrey. Remember when we would go check cattle in the pasture? You always wanted to see the cows, but would scream bloody murder and beg us to keep the truck doors shut at first sight. Do you remember? You were so afraid!"

I don't remember.

But apparently everyone who does continues to find it hilarious.

"We've never seen a kid cry like that. You were absolutely mortified."

I'm not sure why a traumatized child is funny. I think it is perfectly reasonable for a young child to be afraid of cows. In fact, I would argue that adults need not be ashamed of being fearful of cattle. They are big, can be cantankerous, and aren't known for their listening skills.

My trepidation wouldn't have been so bad, except my grandfather was a country veterinarian, and I loved being at his clinic and going on calls. You can understand how a fear of cattle may have interfered with my opportunity to spend time with him. I eventually overcame my fear (although I still have a healthy respect for cows), and I have many fond memories of my Granddad's veterinary practice.

I've also seen him kicked, head butted, stepped on, and run over. All by, you guessed it...cows.

I was thinking about trying to make this a "life application" piece about fear. But, that would be cheesy.

Enjoy your walk in the pasture of life. But, watch out for cows.
